Presentation of project BAB A8 – Enztalquerung – by our member GGS TerraCon GmbH

On January 1, 2021 the Autobahn GmbH, Southwest Division, took over responsibility for this demanding large-scale project from the state. The “Enztalquerung” forms one of the last two sections of the six-lane expansion of the A8 in Baden-Württemberg. In October 2021 the crucial road and earthworks began and have since progressed continuously.

This construction project comprises many individual measures. The main benefits of the project are increased traffic safety and comprehensive noise protection for residents. Throughout the section, noise protection for residents is significantly improved. This included noise barriers and walls along the A8 as well as a 380-meter-long noise protection enclosure.

Our member GGS TerraCon GmbH received the contract, among other things, for the gabion cladding of noise protection retaining walls constructed in concrete.

The service includes about 30,000 wall cladding baskets that are fastened to the concrete retaining walls via a track system. According to RAL-GZ 612, quality-assured and factory-prefabricated wall cladding baskets from our member Rothfuss Best Gabion GmbH & Co. KG were used in the special dimensions LxWxH 1000x300x500 mm, mesh size 50×100 mm, manufactured with wire thickness 4.5 mm. The basket filling was done with natural lava rock in the grain size 60/90 according to TL Gab-StB 2016/23. This results in a reduction of sound absorption by >8 dB according to DIN EN 1793-1.

The construction start of this project was in 2022 and is expected to last until around 2027. The client is STRABAG GmbH, Directorate Baden-Württemberg.
