The retailer LIDL plans to open a modern branch in Brilon. To this end, the existing market will first be dismantled to make space for a new building that will be placed slightly west of the current site.

The particular challenge:
The site in the area of the new construction field has a height difference of about 1.00 to 12.50 meters relative to the lower edge of the market’s foundation at the southwestern property boundary. To optimally use the available area, a as steep as possible retaining structure was required to secure the terrain change.

After examining various solutions, including a conventional concrete wall, the decision was made for a construction using geosynthetic-reinforced earth with gabion facing.

Approximately 25,000 m2 of RAL-GZ 612/4 quality-assured Fortrac geogrid made of polyester (PET) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) from our member company HUESKER Synthetic GmbH were used. The construction of the retaining structure was carried out according to RAL-GZ 612/5 quality assurance by our member GGS TerraCon GmbH in Moritzburg. The RAL-quality-assured gabion grids for the specified facing were supplied by Rothfuss Best Gabion GmbH & Co., Wittlich.

Building-owner was LIDL Dienstleistungen GmbH & Co. KG, 74206 Bad Wimpfen.
